5 Reasons Why to Use WordPress to Build a Website

WordPress, in case you not familiar with it, is an open source Content Management System (CMS) platform, which means it is free and you get an admin control panel to manage all the content on your website.  In particular, it is a very powerful blogging platform.  Actually one of the best in the world.

Why I say that is for a number of reasons…

1. Quick and easy installation

You can literally have a website up in a matter of minutes.  This is no joke!  If you have access to applications like Fantastico this can be done with a few simple clicks.  You don’t have to worry about knowing any of this now, because the free course on how to build a WordPress website, will show you how.  I’m actually going to record a video and have it in a future post, just to show you how quickly and easy it is to setup a WordPress website.

2. Ease of use

The problem I found with many other CMS platforms was that it was difficult to explain to a customer how to manage their website.  On certain occasions the customer has even had to purchase a book on administering their site.  There are other developers out there who swear by these other CMS platforms, such as Joomla, Drupal, etc.  I think the only reason they stick with them is because it is what they have come to know.  I have tried all of them and the main reason for going with WordPress is that I could take a customer through the admin console, and after twenty minutes they understand exactly how the system works.  They walk away with a smile on their face and can’t wait to start adding and making changes to their website.

With every website built, I have actually started creating a short 15-20 min training video on managing their newly built website.  The customer can then go through the video in their spare time and always be able to come back to areas they not familiar with.  These videos have become quite a hit and our customers absolutely love it.

3. Beautiful theme designs

WordPress comes with a standard theme.  The theme is your actual design and layout of your site.  There are over 1,500 free themes to choose from, simple go to http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ to view them all.  These free themes can quickly and easily be installed and activated from within your admin console.  Might create a video on that one too shortly.

If you don’t find anything in the free themes that you like.  You can always purchase a premium theme from one of the many website template stores on the web.  One of the best collection of WordPress themes is a site called ThemeForest.net.  They are quite reasonably priced and have a growing database of talented individuals who dedicate a lot of their time to pumping out fantastic designs.

4. Access to over 20,000 different plugins

What makes WordPress so great is that there is a huge community of developers out there constantly improving the software.  With plugins you can turn your ordinary blog website into absolutely anything, a membership site, a shopping cart, a classified ads portal, a career or job portal, literally anything you can think of, there will be a plugin for it.  The best part is, that these plugins are completely free!

Sure, there will be a few that charge for a premium version of their plugin, with additional features and all sorts, but they will all have a free version.  All WordPress plugins can be found here, http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/.

Once again, all plugins can be searched, installed and activated within your WordPress admin console, with a few simple clicks.

5. SEO is all automated

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is an extremely important factor when developing your site.  You need to ensure that the keywords people are searching for match the title of your page, are included in your URL, are in your Meta Tag description and in Meta Tag keywords, along with the content of your page which needs to be relevant to what people are searching for also.  Not only do the individual pages of your site need to be prepared, but the search engines need to be able to find your site among billions of other websites out there, so they can rank yours accordingly. This means organizing your pages in an XML file which is easy for the search engines to read, and sending it to them each time you make a change to your site.  Which can become an enormous task.

So there are a lot of things you need to consider when it comes to SEO.  Luckily WordPress can do this all for you… on complete autopilot!  All you need to do is install a few simple plugins and it’s all done.  I’ll dedicate another post to this in the near future on the exact plugins to use and how to set them up.  For now I have a post entitled WordPress SEO Done In The Right Manner. In there I mention one of the core plugins which get 80% of all your SEO work done for you.

There are many other reasons why you should use WordPress to build a website, but I’ll leave you with these five for now, because I could go on for days.  It all comes down to finding a platform that is easy to develop on, something where I can create custom features and beautiful designs and most importantly a platform that the customer is more than comfortable in managing, without any technical knowledge.

WordPress is the winner in my book!
